Most "live map" OSINT tools built in the last few years converge on the same feature list: flight tracking, ship tracking, satellite orbits, and some version of live CCTV pulled from wherever the platform can find an open camera. We just shipped a round of upgrades to BorderTrend's Satellite Intelligence tool that covers the first three and deliberately skips the fourth. Here's what we built, why the hazard data matters more than it might look at first glance, and why "live cameras" isn't a checkbox we're willing to tick just because competitors have it.
From Orbital Tracking to a Full Hazard Picture
Satellite Intelligence started as two views: a real-time 3D orbital tracker (ISS, weather satellites, search-and-rescue platforms, Earth observation birds — all from public NORAD data) and an interactive Earth map built on Satellite, Roads, Terrain, and NASA Near Real-Time imagery. That map now defaults to six live overlays instead of zero, each pulling from an official or original data source rather than a third-party aggregator: recent earthquakes (USGS, M4.5+), a day/night terminator computed live from the sun's actual position, BorderTrend's own Global Incidents feed, active wildfires (NASA FIRMS satellite detections), active tropical cyclones (NOAA's National Hurricane Center), and live wait times at major US-Mexico and US-Canada land crossings (CBP's own Border Wait Times system).
Why Earthquakes, Fires, and Hurricanes Belong on a Border Map
None of this is decoration. Land borders are physical infrastructure, and physical infrastructure gets hit by physical hazards. In June 2026, the Border 6 Fire ignited in San Diego County and crossed the Tijuana River drainage from Mexico into the US near Marron Valley, with crews on both sides of the line working the same fire from opposite jurisdictions. A year earlier, in June 2025, two wildfires ignited south of the border and raced toward California before a 1,800-acre fuel break — built specifically along the international boundary — stopped their advance and protected the infrastructure behind it. Wildfire doesn't respect a fence line, and neither does a hurricane: major storms in the Caribbean and Central America have historically been followed by measurable shifts in northbound migration patterns, on top of the more immediate disruption to the maritime corridors BorderTrend already tracks on Maritime Traffic. An earthquake near a port or a land crossing raises the same kind of operational question. Analysts who only think about border security in terms of people and cargo are missing half the picture.
The Feature We Didn't Build
We got asked directly why Satellite Intelligence doesn't include live CCTV, the way some other open-source intelligence platforms do. The honest answer: most "live CCTV" layers on those platforms come from cameras that were never meant to be public — private security cameras left on factory-default passwords, discovered through internet-wide scanning tools and embedded without the owner's knowledge or consent. Accessing those feeds isn't a legal gray area; in the US it runs straight into the Computer Fraud and Abuse Act, on top of whatever privacy law applies to recording people who never agreed to be watched. That's not a foundation we're willing to build a subscription product on, no matter how many other platforms have already made that trade-off.
Border Wait Times solves the underlying need — situational awareness at the crossing itself — without the legal exposure. It's official CBP data, verified against Data.gov's own federal dataset record as a U.S. government work under 17 U.S.C. §105 (not subject to copyright, free to use including commercially), updated roughly hourly, and it tells you something a camera feed can't: how long the passenger and commercial lanes are actually running right now at over twenty major crossings, from San Ysidro to Detroit's Ambassador Bridge.
How to Use It
The Interactive Earth Map is now the default view when you open Satellite Intelligence — pan and zoom anywhere, then toggle any combination of the six overlays from the layers control in the top-right corner. Most days the earthquake and fire layers will show scattered global activity with no direct border relevance, and the tropical cyclone layer will often be empty outside hurricane season — that's correct behavior, not a broken feed. The value is in having the full picture available in one place when it does matter, rather than needing to know in advance which of six different agencies' websites to check.
