On August 28, 2026, South Korean firm SK Gas paid $5.3 million for a single, priority transit slot through the Panama Canal for its LPG tanker, the G. Spirit — a new record, and roughly 100 times the average auction price of about $55,000 recorded between October 2025 and February 2026. The bid wasn't a fluke of one desperate shipper. It was a rational response to a canal that, once again, doesn't have enough water to run at full capacity.
Why a Canal Runs on Rainfall, Not Seawater
It's easy to assume a shipping canal simply lets seawater flow through. The Panama Canal doesn't work that way. Its lock system lifts and lowers ships using freshwater released from Gatun Lake and Alajuela Lake, both fed entirely by rainfall over the surrounding watershed — the same freshwater supply that serves greater Panama City's drinking water. Every transit through the locks releases millions of gallons of that freshwater out to the oceans on either side. When rainfall drops, the canal's operators face a direct trade-off between vessel traffic and the region's water supply, and there's no way to route around it: less rain eventually has to mean fewer ships.
A Crisis the Canal Has Seen Before
This isn't the first time El Niño has forced the issue. A severe drought tied to the 2023 episode cut daily crossings from a normal 38 down to as low as 22 at the worst point, and canal traffic fell by roughly 36% that year, disrupting global supply chains for months. As recently as May 2026, the Panama Canal Authority said it did not expect to impose transit restrictions despite an emerging El Niño forecast. That changed fast: rainfall from May through August 2026 came in 34% below the historical average, prompting Panama to declare a drought emergency, with rainfall deficits reaching 60% on the Pacific side of the isthmus and 11 watersheds already under stress. The Panama Canal was widened in 2016 specifically to add capacity and competitiveness against the Suez Canal. Rainfall variability, not physical throughput, is now the binding constraint — which means the canal's practical capacity can swing year to year based on a weather pattern (El Niño) that no infrastructure investment fully controls.
The Auction Economy of Scarce Water
About nine in ten vessels transit the canal on a pre-booked reservation; the rest compete for the remaining slots at auction. When the Canal Authority tightens the daily transit count, the number of available reservation slots shrinks with it — and so does the number of chances a shipper has to secure passage without a costly wait. That scarcity is priced directly: auction bids had already reached roughly $4 million in April 2026 before SK Gas's $5.3 million bid broke the record again in August. Shippers without a reservation now face longer queues on top of steeper auction costs, and time-sensitive cargo — LPG and other perishable or contractually time-bound freight in particular — is where that pressure shows up first.
Who Actually Pays
A $5.3 million premium on a single transit doesn't stay with the shipping company. It gets built into freight rates, and from there into the delivered cost of whatever the vessel is carrying — fuel, consumer goods, agricultural products moving through one of the world's most heavily trafficked trade arteries. Roughly 5% of global seaborne trade moves through the canal, much of it tied to U.S. East Coast and Gulf Coast import and export flows. Drought-driven transit restrictions function, in effect, as a variable tax on that trade: invisible at the checkout counter, but present in it.
